f you are looking for a dining experience that is truly “one of a kind,” Josie’s at The Jolly Roger in Bovey Tracey is a surreal and delightful Devon gem. Located at the site of the world-renowned Jolly Roger Lifesize Models, this café (sometimes referred to as the Food Hut) is surrounded by an eccentric army of fiberglass figures, from T-Rexes and life-sized pirates to Hollywood icons and superheroes.
While the setting is undeniably bizarre, the food is surprisingly grounded and well-regarded. The menu is famous for the “Josie’s Burger”—a massive 10oz patty stacked with cheese, bacon, and onions that has become a staple for hungry visitors.
The Essentials: They serve classic West Country “baps” filled with local bacon and sausage, alongside thick-cut steak pasties.
The Sweet Side: Being an ice cream parlour at heart, they serve premium Marshfield Farm dairy ice cream, offering a dizzying array of flavors that you can enjoy while sitting next to a seven-foot tall gorilla.
The vibe is unpretentious, community-focused, and incredibly family-friendly. It’s a popular haunt for the local motorcycling community, especially during their “Bike Nights,” where the courtyard fills with gleaming machines. Whether you’re there to browse the thousands of models in the showroom or just stopping for a quick coffee, Josie’s provides a dose of pure, colorful escapism.
