Located in the heart of Exmoor National Park, the Withypool Tea Room is a quintessential stop for those navigating the rugged landscapes of West Somerset. Situated in the picturesque village of Withypool, right by the stone bridge over the River Barle, this tea room is housed in a building that once served as a petrol station, giving it a unique, vintage charm that feels like a step back in time.
The tea room is a well-known “biker-friendly” destination for those riding the winding moorland roads of Exmoor:
Off-Street Parking: There is space available for parking in the immediate vicinity of the village shop and tea room complex. The surfaces are generally stable, though riders should be mindful of the narrow village lanes and occasional wandering livestock typical of the moor.
Outside Seating: One of the main highlights is the extensive outside seating area. There are tables both at the front and in a secluded “sun trap” garden at the rear, allowing riders to relax and keep an eye on their bikes while enjoying the rural atmosphere.
Friendly Welcome: The staff are famously welcoming to all visitors, including groups of bikers, walkers, and cyclists. It’s an unpretentious, casual environment where you can comfortably rest and recharge during a long day on the road.
The Withypool Tea Room is celebrated for its traditional, home-cooked menu and generous portion sizes:
Signature “Withybig” Treats: The menu’s star is the “Withybig” range, particularly the massive cream teas served with homemade scones, local jams, and thick clotted cream. They also offer a popular “Withybig” cheese scone for those who prefer something savoury.
Hearty Meals: For a more substantial refuel, they serve fresh baguettes, hot pasties, and homemade quiches. Breakfast rolls are also available for early arrivals.
The “Brew”: They offer a wide selection of teas and quality coffees, as well as local ales, ciders, and lagers for those finishing their day’s ride.
The Withypool Tea Room is a participating venue in the Bike and Brew Passport scheme. This initiative, run by the MARK Charity, encourages the motorcycling community to support independent businesses while raising awareness for mental health. It’s a perfect spot to get your passport stamped while taking in the stunning views of the Barle Valley.
