The story of the legendary Harley-Davidson dynasty begins right here at the Davidson Legacy Cottage in northeast Scotland.
The Davidson family traces its origins back to the tiny village of Aberlemno, close to the historic market town of Brechin. Here, Alexander (“Sandy”) Davidson worked as the local wright at the Netherton Smiddy (blacksmith’s shop).
Sandy and his wife, Margaret, shared the two-bedroom smiddy cottage with their six children and two workers. Nestled amidst the stunning, rolling Scottish countryside, this picturesque cottage was the starting point before Sandy and Margaret packed up and embarked on a new life in Wisconsin, USA.
Once settled in America, one of Sandy and Margaret’s sons, William C. Davidson, met and married fellow Scot Margaret McFarlane, who hailed from Stirlingshire.
Their three sons—Arthur, Walter, and William—teamed up with an Englishman named Bill Harley to forge a legacy that would change motorcycling history forever as the founders of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company®.
