Lore of the Sky

Perched 800 feet above sea level within the historic Compton Abbas Airfield, Lore of the Sky is a destination that offers far more than a typical roadside stop. Situated in the heart of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this smokehouse and restaurant—backed by Guy Ritchie’s team—occupies a unique space where aviation heritage meets authentic Texas-style barbecue.

For motorcyclists, the draw is immediate. The airfield is located just off the C13/B3081 between Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum, a stretch of road famous among local riders for its sweeping bends and dramatic elevation changes. Upon arrival, the site offers ample, flat parking, making it easy for solo riders or large groups to park up safely with the airfield’s hangars and vintage aircraft as a backdrop.

The venue is a proud participant in the Bike and Brew Passport scheme. This nationwide initiative, run by the charity Motorbiker Acts of Random Kindness (M.A.R.K.), encourages riders to explore independent, biker-friendly venues across the UK. It provides a simple way to collect unique stamps in a physical passport, with the scheme supporting the charitable work of M.A.R.K. while giving riders a high-quality “reason to ride.”

The food at Lore of the Sky, South West, is a significant step up from standard cafe fare. The kitchen utilises a legendary J&R Oyler Smoker—the first of its kind in the UK—to produce oak-smoked pork belly, brisket, and flat iron steaks. For those arriving early, they serve a robust breakfast menu, while the “Low and Slow” lunch service is a major weekend attraction.

The outdoor patio is the place to be, offering a front-row seat to watch vintage Spitfires and Tiger Moths take off and land. Whether you are chasing a passport stamp or simply looking for a premium pitstop with panoramic views over the Dorset countryside, Lore of the Sky provides a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere for the two-wheeled community. Note that the establishment is card-only and operates seven days a week.
