Located in the village of Tre’r-ddôl, halfway between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth, Cletwr is far more than just a convenience stop. It is a vibrant, community-owned social enterprise that serves as a vital lifeline for North Ceredigion. Born from a grassroots effort to restore local services after the village shop and café closed in 2010, Cletwr officially opened its doors in 2013 and has since evolved into an award-winning hub of activity and Welsh culture.
The heart of Cletwr is its welcoming café and well-stocked shop. The café is renowned for its homemade food, ranging from hearty breakfasts and seasonal specials to an irresistible array of cakes, all sourced with a firm “local first” ethos. The shop complements this by offering everyday essentials alongside premium Welsh produce, supporting local farmers and artisans. By providing these services in a rural area where the nearest supermarket is miles away, Cletwr actively combats rural isolation and helps residents save on travel costs.
Beyond retail, this wonderful spot functions as a “wellbeing hub.” It hosts a diverse range of community groups, including “Knit and Natter” sessions, Welsh language classes (Dal Ati), and art exhibitions featuring local creators. It even manages a fuel oil syndicate and a “Bee Friendly” garden, proving its commitment to both social and environmental sustainability.
Adding to its list of community initiatives, we are a proud participant in the Bike and Brew Passport event. This charitable initiative, organised by the Make Your Mark charity, encourages motorcyclists to explore the scenic roads of Wales and England while supporting independent businesses. Bikers can stop at Cletwr to “release the clutch and quiet the noise,” enjoying a warm brew and a stamp for their passport. By taking part, Cletwr helps raise funds for mental health awareness and grassroots causes, further cementing its reputation as a place where everyone—from local residents to passing riders—can find a sense of belonging.
Our full menu, including hot food, is available every day, Monday to Sunday until 3.00pm. After that we offer drinks and cakes until we close.
