Located on Green Lane in the heart of Dolgellau, Yr Hen Efail (The Old Smithy) is a total classic for anyone touring the Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park. It’s a quirky, traditional Welsh tea room that’s basically legendary for its breakfast—it even won “Best Fry-up in North Wales” a few years back.
The Setup

Solid Parking: This is a huge plus in Dolgellau’s narrow streets. There is a decent-sized car park right outside the café, so you’ve got a stable, level spot to park the bike without faffing around.

The Courtyard: They’ve got a beautiful little courtyard for outside seating. It’s the perfect spot to sit with your gear off on a sunny morning, soak up the mountain air, and watch the world go by.

Friendly Vibe: Yr Hen Efail is run by a welcoming team and is popular with everyone from local walkers to touring bikers. It’s got that “hidden gem” feel despite being right in the village.
The Grub

The Award-Winning Breakfast: This is why people stop here. The full Welsh breakfast is massive, properly cooked, and usually includes high-quality local sausages and bacon. They even do a highly-rated vegetarian version with Glamorgan sausages.

Tea in Proper Mugs: No tiny cups here. You get a proper, steaming mug of tea or a giant pot, which is exactly what you need after a chilly morning ride through the passes.

Lunch & Treats: If you’re past breakfast time, they do a cracking homemade lasagne, beef stew, and some seriously good cakes (the biscoff cheesecake and carrot cake are winners).
The Passport
Yr Hen Efail is another key stop for the Bike and Brew Passport scheme. It’s a great place to get your stamp for the MARK Charity while you’re tackling the roads around Cadair Idris. Supporting mental health while clearing your head on the Welsh A-roads—doesn’t get much better than that.
